This month, we say goodbye to our beloved Production Manager of one and a half years, Malie Fujii.

Malie has been involved with Sound Theatre Company since 2017. She joined our staff in the middle of our 2020 mainstage co-production of Reparations. Even in transition, she jumped into the process and took care of needs in an immediate, thoughtful way.

When we adjusted to working from home, Malie’s digital aptitude and technical skills augmented our working capacity. She was instrumental in setting up the new Google Suite, as well as facilitating anti-racism company meetings and the non-Black POC affinity group spaces.

In our digital production, Changer The Radio Play, Malie acted as both producer and audio engineer. She led Sound Theatre Company in bringing this production to life in a new medium and role, researching and developing new skills to finish it. Because of her work, audiences across the country can experience the intimate magic of these Coast Salish and Dakota origin stories.

In tandem with community energy in bettering theatre for all, Malie guided the company in reimagining the production process. For the cancelled production of ASL Madwoman of Chaillot, Malie made a more humanely-structured rehearsal calendar. She also coordinated recording equipment and managed technical and logistical needs for nearly 50 people across Washington. She shared responsibilities with a team, working with an assistant production manager and three co-stage managers. Although audiences won’t see the finished product, Malie’s work to move us toward a more anti-capitalist, human-centered process will be felt in future productions to come.

Malie is an excellent creative problem solver and organizer of people, plans, and ideas. We will miss her ability to generate schedules and checklists at the drop of a dime. We will remember her for her dedication to the ideals that we aspire to: community, collaboration, integrity, and a commitment to building a just and compassionate world.

Sound Theatre Company’s mission is to empowers artists to give voice to the dignity and diversity of the human experience–moving audiences toward a more just and compassionate world.
