We missed Karli’s warm smile at the box office while we were at home last year. Luckily, she continued working with us. We chatted with her recently. Our questions are in bold text and Karli’s responses are in plain text.
What do you do at Sound Theatre?
I am here to help Sound Theatre in anyway I can. I usually work at the box office or I house manage. But since Covid and all the houses and box offices close my work has changed and adapted. I now do more office and business work. I answer emails and I enter data. I have also joined the accessibility team and work with them to add any support I can. I am always around to help whoever needs a little more support.
How did you get started working with Sound Theatre?
I hear a ton about Sound Theatre from many of my friends about Sound Theatre and all the work that they do and their mission. I instantly fell in love with all of it. Then I was told that they were hiring for their box office and I knew that was my chance to jump into the amazing work this company does myself. I meet so many people who have taught me so much and I have life-long friends.
Can you tell me about what you do outside of Sound Theatre?
I am a busy bee one job is not enough for me. My dream is to be an actor full time. I am not quite there yet so I have my day job as a florist because I knew I had to stay created and I love working with flowers as well. Its a cute job for a lover of cute things. I do get to be an actor when I can. Doing shows when they were around and doing radio dramas now that we have adapted. I can also be found hitting the ski slopes or crafting little scrap books.
What makes you passionate about theatre/the arts?
Honestly what doesn’t. I love connecting with actors on stage. I love connecting with the audience watching. I love that theatre has such an impact on people. Sometimes what you need the most is to be in a place full of people and see your story come to life and know that you are not alone. Sound does this so well. They show so many stories. Stories that sadly rarely get seen. Theatre is a place for people to live. To meet others and share a laugh, a tear, a lesson. I am the happiest I ever am when I am in the theatre. It is a magical place that is sometimes hard to put into words.
What’s a personal/professional accomplishment that you are most proud of?
The first time I was ever paid to act was probably my most excited accomplishment. The world is always telling me that I will never make it and that theatre isn’t a real job but when I got paid to do the thing I love the most. I proved all the haters wrong. I was so proud of myself. I was so happy. Now it absolutely was not much I think it barely covered my gas to get there but it was the start of something and I am so excited to keep following that and doing more and more theatre not just for the money but for the story and if it can be the thing I spend all my time doing that would be incredible.
What’s something cool about yourself that other people might not know?
I am a terrible cook. Can not make many things and not a baker either. BUT! I make killer chocolate chip cookies!!! That is the one thing I have worked to perfect. Took me many mistaken, flat, burnt cookies. But I can now make great cookies. Told “these are perfectly shaped did you go to the store to buy them” and “these are better than toll house”. So only ask me for cookies and nothing else.
